CULTURE DUB ORCHESTRA

Culture Dub Orchestra is a six piece instrumental world dub collective. A heavy roots drum and bass section crucial to the true dub sound is coloured by violin and bouzouki, adding eastern flavours. Guitar and keys deliver the essential reggae off-beat with a large palette of delays, while an array of live percussion from tabla to jembe bring it all together to take your mind on a spiritual nomadic journey. Members are all interconnected through previous music projects ranging through reggae, funk, soul, hip hop, ska, rock, salsa, and Eastern folk- contributing to the unique fusion of sounds. The band incorporates all cultures, religions, backgrounds and musical stylings. The majority of dub today is produced digitally in a studio and thus isn’t live. Culture Dub Orchestra is an exception to this rule, instead concentrating on using live instruments; working to create an organic sound influenced by anything from nature to ancient history. Initially, melodies and harmonies are written on the rhythm and lead instruments (violin, guitar, bouzouki, keys) in the mind of a certain culture, once a melody is established, the roots drum and bass foundation are added to hold it all together or vice versa and the drums and bass parts are wrote first. Although Culture Dub Orchestra has been going for just over a year now, all the members are experienced having performed live on a global scale for many years. Audiences often comment on the impact of the live sound, agreeing that the range of instruments fills out the sound enough to captivate without vocals. CDO plan to develop the collective further by building there own sound system and to collaborate with other sounds systems, producers and artists. CDO are currently working on two albums, one roots dub, the other eastern world dub, to be released this Summer. Influences include: Burning Spear, Jah Shaka, Thievery Corporation, King Earthquake, Aba Shanti I, Defacto, Massai Warrior, Santana, Augustus Pablo, Mad Professor, Mulatu Astatke, Inkuyo, Bad Brains, Ravi Shankar, Shanghai Chinese Traditional Orchestra etc.
